Welcome to Kakira Sugar

Uganda's leading producer of sugar.

Kakira Sugar is extracted from cane grown on lush plantations on the shores of Lake Victoria. The sweet, sparkling crystals with their distinctive taste and flavour, and rich golden colour, have sweetened dishes all over Uganda since the 1930s!

Currently there are over 7,000 registered farmers, who are supplying over 1,000,000 tons of cane per year to Kakira Sugar, which is 65% of Kakira's cane consumption.

Kakira Sugar provides full assistance and support to independent Outgrower farmers including:

  • Supply of Seed Cane and Agro-chemicals.
  • Advice on agricultural practices and techniques.
  • Use of Kakira Sugar's agricultural equipment where require, etc.

The success of the Kakira's Outgrowers Scheme is reflected by the steady increase in the Outgrowers cane supply, which will steadily continue to grow during Kakira's Expansion Programme to over 1.7 million tons of cane p.a. as an exciting new initiative. This growth will be achieved by increasing the area under cane and productivity of the exciting outgrowers as well as registering new farmers.

Kakira and the Busoga Sugar Cane Growers Association have established the Kakira Outgrowers Rural Development Fund (KORD). Both the farmers and the company support the fund by the way of per ton contributions related to volume of their cane supply. KORD are identifying and implementing several infrastructure projects and provide financial services to the Kakira community. Initial projects include provision of loans to Outgrowers as well as development of in-field access roads and health care facuilities for the area.

Kakira Sugar plants trees along estate roads and where land is not suitable for growing sugarcane.
